PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Students who are caring, compassionate, and possess critical thinking skills should check out Health Occupations Technology (HOT). Statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry indicate that occupations in health care will continue to experience a high growth rate and always be in demand.
First year students complete the Certified Patient Care Technician curriculum, learning the concepts and skills that they will need to progress in the program. They will also complete coursework in Medical Terminology and Abbreviations. Job shadow experiences at a local hospital are completed. Second year students complete a basic Anatomy & Physiology course. They also complete Medical Terminology and Abbreviations to reinforce first year learning. Students who have progressed to second year will have the opportunity to complete clinical hours in simulations in the lab setting and certification as an electrocardiogram technician. Third year students have the opportunity to participate in Cooperative Education and obtain certification as a Phlebotomy Technician if students meet criteria to sit for the exam. Medical terminology and abbreviations are interwoven throughout the third year. Clinical experiences are completed during the third year of the program. During the course of the Health Occupations curriculum, students will have the opportunity to obtain three American Heart Association certifications including Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, & OSHA 10-Hour Healthcare Safety.
